Know about Obesity Health Risks

By mia green at 2010-01-09 04:10:06
Weight, health and fitness are closely related to each other. In fact, 'lose weight fast and safe' is the mantra of this generation. But then also obesity rules supreme in almost all the continents. Most people agree that being overweight would increase the risk of many diseases and health conditions. These include heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stroke, osteoarthritis, gallbladder disease, respiratory problems, colon cancer, breast cancer, liver damage, etc.

Obese or overweight people are more likely to suffer from the above mentioned diseases twice as compared to people of normal weight. Moreover there are certain other diseases that are very closely related to obesity; i.e. deep vein thrombosis, breathing problems, chronic venous insufficiency, fatty liver disease and health risk of expectant mother and baby etc.

To define the level of obesity in a person, you can use either the body mass index and body fat rate, that is compared against standards already defined. This can distinguish between exogenous obesity (due to overfeeding and unbalanced), and obesity endogenous (caused by metabolic disorder).

Childhood obesity can increase the chances that a child will develop issues with asthma, and obesity can further complicate existing asthmatic issues. Experts are now finding that there may be a link between the onset of asthma and obesity.

Diabetes is often cited as a side effect of obesity, regardless of ethnicity. African Americans, however, see diabetes at a rate of over 26 percent, versus a rate of only 14 percent for their white counterparts. In addition, the risk of developing pancreatic cancer is much higher for African American women than it is for white women of the same weight and age.

Gallstones : If you're obese, you're more likely to develop gallstones and even more so if you're a woman.

Hypothyroidism : If you're an obese woman over 50, you have a higher chance of developing hypothyroidism, a condition that can actually cause you to gain extra weight and other serious health problems.

One health risk that has been evaluated for you is the smoking factor. Most states have prohibited smoking in all public places and as a result fewer adults are not smoking. The number of teens not smoking, however, has not decreased as much.

Health issues such as strokes, sleep apnea and coronary artery disease are often associated with obesity as well. There are many factors which increase chances of diseases in an obese person. Alcohol, smoking, and high blood pressure due to a poor diet increase the chances of life threatening illnesses in those who are obese.

Blount's disease- Obesity is a known cause of Blount's Disease which usually involves the lower extremities deformity mainly due to over bearing of body weight especially in bones that are still undergoing growth. However, this is one of the very minor problems of obesity.

Breathing problems (including sleep apnea) - It is a serious condition that causes a person to stop breathing for short periods during sleep and to snore heavily. It may cause daytime exhaustion or even heart failure. The heavier you are the greater your chances of having sleep apnea. Sleep apnea usually improves with weight loss.

Start doing things like eating more frequently rather than bunching up all your meals at one time. Eat healthier choices like lean meats, fruits, and vegetables. Generally you should stay away from any foods high in refined sugar. This can increase the risk of diabetes. Stay away from bad fats like trans fat which is the worstkind for your body.
