How to Get Rid of Hiccups

By mia green at 2010-01-20 05:32:21
Hiccup is an involuntary and sudden contraction of the muscles of the diaphragm. Normally, this action is repeated many times. A weird sound (hic) is produced. The sound is because of the epiglottis which closes when air suddenly tries to rush in.

People who have recurring hiccups or a case of hiccups that just doesn't seem to go away should definitely make an appointment with their medical doctor to explore any underlying medical problems.

Causes of Hiccups:

Temporary swollen stomach
Alcohol
Excessive smoking
Emotional stress

The diaphragm helps us breathe. When inhaling or exhaling, it helps pull air into and out of the lungs. But sometimes when the nerve controlling the diaphragm get irritated, it results in hiccups. Irritating occurs when air suddenly gushes into the epiglottis which makes the epiglottis close and a weird noise known as a 'hic' is produced.

Common every day activities such as eating hot & spicy food; drinking carbonated drinks; sudden prolonged bouts of laughter; intense emotions, i.e. shock, fear, excitement; fumes of all kinds; excess smoking; cold air; or cold water can all act as triggers.

There are many home remedies for hiccups. Holding your breath is one of them. Others find relief in drinking cold water, gargling while holding one's breath, coughing, sneezing, putting a pinch of salt on the back of the tongue, breathing into a paper bag or a sharp yank on the tongue. Being startled can also stop hiccups in some people.

Remedies for hiccups:

One of the best remedy is to drink water recurrently in short intervals.

Gargling with lukewarm water.

To 1/2 bowl of curd add 2 tbsp of salt and mix it properly. Eating this curd is also effective remedy.

Cut fresh ginger into small pieces; suck these small pieces of ginger.

The most popular hiccup remedies involve drinking water in unusual ways and patterns. Drinking a glass of water holding your breath is a favorite cure.

Other individuals may try taking a spoonful of sugar. Whether this works or not depends on the person and is not likely to help chronic hiccups, but it's worth a try.

Try holding your breath for a count of ten, then exhaling, three times in succession. Usually, this is a good cure for hiccups. You can also take three long, large gulps of water.

Get a medium-large glass of water - at least 350ml. Whilst standing lean over so head is below groin. Now drink the full glass of water upside down- this means drinking whilst bent over with glass on top lip.

Distract yourself. Sing a song, go over your 7 times tables (7 x 1 = 7, 7 x 2 = 14, etc) until the hiccups are gone.

A spoon full of peanut butter makes the hiccups go awayEat a tablespoon of peanut butter.

Touching a spoon against the uvula repeatedly while you try to breathe in, breathing into a bag, drinking water from the back side of a glass, massaging your neck, pulling on your tongue, sudden fright, pressing on your eyeball, or holding your breath.

That's it! Your hiccups should be gone.
